I’m looking out of my big bay window into one of the horse’s grazing pastures to see Dan and Quill resting. Dan is standing like a statute with his head lowered and Quill my matriarch mare is lying down with her legs curled up underneath her. Both Dan and Ollie, two geldings of the entire herd of five, share in the responsibility of devoted guardians that keep a watchful eye on the horizon for any possible predatory attacks; thus sending silent signals that keeps the entire herd safe.
I feel my inner wild self being called to join them in their herd setting under the beautiful deep blue sky, so I stop what I’m doing and enthusiastically head out into the morning’s stillness where I am surrounded by autumns multicolored leaves, and a symphony of sweet bird and cricket sounds. I feel so alive, what a gift to experience this!
As I approach the herd, I’m cordially greeted by Dandy Impressive, nickname Dan, who showers me with soft vibrating nickers, as if to say, “Where have you been“? What a gift to be welcomed into their space! As evidenced by his symbolic vocal tones emanating from his powerful body.
I sense it as a loving invitation to join them in nature, to BE still, curious, and listen to my own inner intelligence while enjoying the warmth of the morning sun. I then sit on the ground next to Quill and relinquish any control, when Dan leaves his important position and walks to the barn leaving me as the guardian of Quill.
Approximately eight minutes go by when we see him slowly walking back into the pasture to consume more of his early morning hay.
What happens next can only be described as magic. After sitting with Quill for a few minutes she slowly lowers her head to rest on the ground, and I’m right there next to her. For a horse to do this there must be complete trust as they are putting their life in a very vulnerable position.
As Quill and I sit in each other’s company, and while I gently pet her head and neck, I feel such a beautiful inner connection to her. It’s as if our two bodies and minds united as one, true harmony. I’ve entered a different world, where time stands still, and self-transformation takes place. I can only explain it as a kind space where the horse’s spirit lights a path of new possibilities and expansion of one’s soul. A shift in the way I perceive things, life. Something that is open to all of us if we just slow down from culture’s driving force and take the time to ask the important questions.
Are you ready to expand, make your own decisions and answer to what is calling to you? The horses are guiding us to explore our wild self, to connect with our true nature, addressing those things that hold us back, so we can realize our fullest potential.
SITTING WITH HORSE ACTIVITY
To do:
- Sit or stand comfortably in an open pasture, a field, a fenced in safe place where horses freely roam.
- Do nothing for a few minutes, the longer the better!
- After making a connection with a horse, look softly into the horse’s eye or eyes (no staring) as the soft look fosters a compassionate connection with yourself and the horse. Note: Holding gentle eye contact with the horse, you are also looking at yourself, as we are all interconnected, humans, horses, and nature. We may speak a different language, but we all come from the same source.
- Commit to doing this activity consistently over time, as each experience will be different, and the messages you receive will be unique to where you are at on your own life’s journey.
After sitting or standing with the horse; answer the following questions:
- How did you feel during the activity with the horse, what came up?
- Was there eye contact? If yes, what did you sense, notice in yourself?
- What was notable about the activity, being with horse?
- Any new feelings, emotions, thoughts, discoveries, or breakthroughs?
Like most people you had a glimpse into the relationship you have with yourself, someone else, or the world around you. The horse reflects to you your emotions, your feelings, your old ways of being, and the limiting beliefs you will need to change if you want to live to your fullest potential.
Being in the presence of a horse, no matter if you are sitting next to, making friends, or training – opens the deeper hidden parts of you. Things you might not consciously be aware of, but can feel at the core such as; creativity, frozen pain, or old stories – that silently wants to bubble to the surface to be acknowledged, healed, or let go.
As you acknowledge your innate gifts or release the things that are holding your desires back, you will feel lighter and more expansive throughout your entire body. And that is powerful work!
- Finish with saying something out loud such as “I understand now,” “I see you, the real you,” “I’m going to do one small thing that I need [insert what need] so I can move forward” etc.
- Then track your progress and how you are doing. Get support from others, find your tribe. You owe it to yourself to follow your dreams as in the pursuit is where the magic happens.
If you choose to do this activity; I would love to hear about your experience in the comments below.
Love and many horse hugs to you!
