Emotions and Expression through Movement

August 22, 2018 by Pam Kachelmeier Leave a Comment

To be congruent, authentic with one-self, is a societal condition with which not many people are familiar with. We have been taught at a young age to suppress how we really feel, to not openly express ourselves.

Consequently, we move in a certain manner and express through our body what we feel buried inside.

To a horse, a person’s body movement sends a message, an emotional signal. Is the body moving in such a way that the human can be trusted, what are the messages behind the emotions? Can the horse and human be in harmony together, or does the horse want to move away?

The horse loves concise clear messages, as feeling and movement are intricately connected. How a horse moves like Quill in the video is connected to how she feels, and how she feels will be expressed through how she moves. Can you see how she feels, how can you tell?

Think about a time when you went dancing and had a wonderful time. Were you connected to your body, how you felt? How did you express yourself, what kind of moves did you make? What did you feel during those moves?

Like Quill in the video, through expressive movement, you probably felt elevated postures, feeling light and balanced in your body. You felt good and were congruent with what you were feeling.

To be congruent with one-self, to change what you feel in your body, you must remain aware, conscious of the special connection between movement and feelings. Track your emotions; excitement, joy, love, fear, angst, or anger as examples, and notice how your body is responding to how you feel.

You owe it to yourself to be expressive in your body when safe to do so, just like Quill the horse.

May you find a horse near you and dance to a harmonious tune together!
