Building a deeper connection with horses brings a zest for life, if you are willing to lose your dominance.
Since I was a little girl growing up with and playing with horses, I’ve seen many people use dominance as a means of trying to develop a deeper connection with a horse, instead of allowing closeness to naturally unfold. Which never works!
What does dominance mean?
It means over the years human beings have given much significance to the masculine approach, because survival has been the dominant force, which results in power and a controlling influence over others, including horses. Typically this is still used to train horses and in many situations control people even though we don’t live in that kind of world anymore.
This is what has damaged and continues to diminish the well-being of humans and horses, but we can change that aspect of ourselves especially in how we chose to live today.
The way to change this is through going within to do one’s inner work – changing the old patterns, paradigms. And replacing them with using gentleness and a respectful approach, creating genuine trust, and working together. Which includes giving the horse a say and what they want within safe limits.
When there is established trust, the horse is willing to connect in any grassy field, even if other horses are grazing nearby.
Are you more dominate or respectful?
To build a deeper connection with a horse or someone else in your life, start with looking at your own interactions with family, friends, and social situations. When with others pay attention to your communications with them. What you say, how you say it, and what you do. You will see that you are more dominant, or you will see that you are more respectful.
Which one do you choose?
Over the years I’ve experienced that people and horses do not like to be dominated or controlled; but rather be respected.
Want to replace dominance with respect?
If you feel you are more dominant then respectful and want to change that that aspect of yourself for the benefit of you and others, then it’s time to decide whether you are willing to do some inner work. One of the best ways to change is to take responsibility, to put into action what wants to happen.
And I can’t think of a more effective and fun way to do that then to build a deeper connection with a horse. You will learn so much about yourself, in addition to feeling a sense of excitement and joy through engaging with a horse!
