Here is an activity you can do to help you to understand that the feelings in your body are direct messages, a guide to help you with what to do.
Please do the activity first and then read the rest of the article.
Again, no peeking ahead of the activity. In the activity you will be taking note of what you’re feeling in your body.
When you are ready, do the following:
- Grab an empty glass, any kind will do. Fill the glass half full of water, and as you are filling it, I’ll bet you’re thinking or maybe not, about being asked the question is the glass “half empty or half full”.
- Now, walk around the room holding the glass of water in your hand and raise the glass of water as if to propose a toast. Continue walking for a minute or two in this position.
- Then answer the question, “How heavy is the glass of water you’re holding?”
- Your answer will vary, 6 oz., 8 oz., 10 oz., or more. What was your guess?
Ok, so you did the activity, good for you. Read on and use this activity as a representation of the different areas, circumstances in your life. Here’s how to use it:
- The glass of water, the weight does not matter, because it depends on how long you hold it.
- Raise the glass of water again and challenge yourself to see how long you can hold it. Do you have the motivation to do that, why or why not? My guess is you would not want to do that.
- If you are holding the glass, is it getting heavier? How does your arm feel after holding it for one minute? Pretty easy right? Now see yourself holding the glass for 30 minutes, how do you think your arm would feel? How about 1 hour? How about 2 hours? How about 1 full day?
- I would presume your arm would start to ache, and the longer you hold the glass of water, your arm would feel numb, and then your body, and then paralyzing.
- So, even though the weight of the glass does not change, the longer your hold it the heavier it becomes, right?
Think about something in your life right now, something that is stressful, something that needs to change, something that feels heavy, where you feel numb. And you fall into a pattern of ignoring it with distractions, addictions, or deflecting as a way of not facing it.
Or you’re feeling the world’s weight of chaos and stress, through the different visual media channels.
What the glass of water represents is how long can you hold onto something in your body that does not feel right, weighs you down? How much pain does it take before you decide to let go of the heaviness?
At first not so much, then more time goes by and you feel that achy pain more. Then some more time goes by and you can feel something deep inside that says something needs to change, the pain is getting to be too much, to the point you feel paralyzed, incapable of doing anything. What is one to do?
Solution:
- Put the glass of water down!!! Do something out of your daily routine, do something that excites you, go on a mini vacation, reach out to someone with where you want to be, play, exercise, be creative. It’s time for you to take back your life.
Another Solution:
- Stop catering to the news especially first thing in the morning. Stop catering to others’ fears, society’s fears, causing you to feel a lack of, yucky. Instead, get offline and sit in silence. Slowdown to go within, meditate and process your thoughts, what does your heart say, that inner voice, what is your truth?
One more:
- Play with your horse, have fun with no agenda. Be patient when engaging with him or her, as the first few minutes can be challenging because we have trained our brains to associate with doing something productive. When in reality the constant doing creates an accumulation of of stress in the body overtime.
- We have programmed our minds to ignore the subtle feelings in our body with saying things like there is nothing to stress about, or fix, everything is fine. You are only deceiving yourself.
You are the only one that can feel your stress, what you’re feeling in your body, no one else can. It’s up to you to change that and live the life of your choosing. Do it for you, your health, others, and the world.
